So, I was going to write this post on Perspective. However, as I wrote it I had a revelation that we needed to discuss where stress comes from in the first place.
Ever realize that it takes like, no time at all to change your mood? For instance you see an ex partner at a party and suddenly you feel very different. Or, a friend says something rude and cruel to you and instead of enjoying your time with them, like you were a few seconds ago, you now want to rip their silly little head off and drop kick it over a field goal...!
The reason why our attitude can change so fast is because of our amazingly smart brain and how fast it can operate. We are constantly deciding what is good or bad and wrong or right, not on its own mind you. And the one thing that our intellect has been taught over and over again to know is right and good is freedom.
Freedom is ingrained into our soul (without getting too deep).
And that is where negative stress comes from, a lack of control or lack of choice.
There are some things that are completely out of our control and those are the things that are often the most difficult to come to terms with. Example? We are all going to die one day. Another? We must be safe and need to eat to stay alive, therefore we must create value in exchange for compensation to pay for food and shelter.
However, have you noticed that some people on this earth fear death more than others or dread going to work more than others. It is because some people see that they have more choice than others in these necessary areas.
The more choice you believe you have the less stress you will have. If you believe you have ultimate decision making ability about your life and the people in it you will never be negatively stressed ever again. Wow!
And I will tell you there is a secret to this... psst... come closer... you can choose what you think.
Take for instance the example of you hanging out with your friend that just said an atrocious comment that pissed you the poop right off. There are infinite ways to choose to think about this situation.
Ex. - "What a butt muncher, they don't even respect me. Oh. they are not the friend I thought they were."
Ex. - "Ha what a pansy!... Idiot."
Ex. "Wow, they have never acted like this. Man, there must be something really bugging them. Maybe I can help."
Ex. "Shoot, they are having a rough go today. Maybe they need some time alone, I know I do sometimes."
Noticed that even reading the mental responses above produced different emotional states in you. and you weren't even involved in the situation.
The point is that you can choose what you believe, what you think, what you say, and do. And if you truly realize and grasp that, you are one step closer to living a stress free life.
The more control and realization of control you believe you have over choice, the more your fate rests in your hands. As opposed to the hands of someone or something else.
Last thing! There is a catch. If you think negative things, you will receive negative emotions (stress). If you think positive things, you will receive positive emotions.
We will talk about the 5 components of choice in detail in the corresponding articles. Next article will be on perspective or perception.
Now you know going in, that you have choice over your perception!
Homework - Write in your journal on the following prompts. Remember you are doing this to cure your cancer. This is all apart of the process because stress creates cancer.
1. What is your deepest fear? (One Sentence)
2. How do you feel when you think about it? (Two sentences)
3. What is the worst case scenario? (One sentence)
4. If the worst case scenario were to occur, would you be ok?
If you answered Yes to #4., skip question #5. and go to question #6.
If you answered No to #4., go to # 5.
5. will you positively and physically die from the worst case scenario?
If you answered No to #6.,
If you answered Yes to #5., Then don't do it or you'll die, you nut!
6. Then do you feel better?
Extra Credit - Make a commitment to only think of positive thoughts let no negative words exit your mouth.
