Where does nutrition come form?
Do you know how nutrition is created?
When asked on the street, the most common answer is, "from plants and animals."
"But where do the plants get nutrition?"
"From the soil," they will respond.
"So rocks and sand have the nutrition in them?"
Realizing their knowledge gap they often swing back with, "Well, its a combination of water, rocks, and sun."
"Then why are some soils more nutritious than others?"
Anyway, you get the point.
We, as a nation, have gotten so out of touch of our food that we don't even know how it is produced and where it comes from.
Nutrition comes from top-soil. Top-soil is a crust, the top layers of soil that takes many years to develop. Top-soil is anywhere from 2-10 inches deep. This is where all the magic happens; where nutrition is made. In order for this layer of soil to develop correctly, it requires years to build the ecosystem that it requires to create nutrition.
What exists in top-soil?
Good question. Top-soil is an entire other universe that we will never fully understand. But, what we do know is that it is full of trillions of different micro-organisms and an eccentric ecosystem teaming with life.
Millions of encounters and reactions are taking place in this layer at any point in time. Worms eat small rocks and excrement caviar for micro organisms, millions of micro-organisms are dying and reproducing and eating and releasing excrement, and on and on and on.
On more relative terms, top soil is the crust that many nature trails have signs posted "do not step on the crust" because it will damage its delicate ecosystem. (Similar to Godzilla taking a stroll down Ventura Blvd.)
Additionally, any experienced construction developer understands that when a new track of land is purchased for a subdivision or whatever, their first step is to have the first foot of soil (eeach-hem) scraped up into a pile and then sold to famers for a hefty price because of its dense nutrient properties.
Thus the reason that our food has become so nutritionally starved is because we have been killing the top soil. And if we kill enough of it. It will become endangered and many more humans will starve.
But it is true. And how are we killing it? Well there are several issues but primarily... pesticides.
My next article will be on pesticides and their impact, however, before we dive into that bit of mess, think about this:
Since pesticides were created to kill large insects, what do you think they will do to the micro-organisms that cause the nutritional density of the top soil?
